INTRODUCING MY SENIOR COLLECTION:
NUESTRA TIERRA
Mexican women are the roots of MEXICAN culture.
Nuestra Tierra, Our Land, is a collection inspired by traditional and modern femininity in Mexico. This collection promotes women’s continuous fight to be seen and heard in a misogynist culture. I’m originally from Mexico City, so I wanted to promote Mexican craftsmanship through traditional embroidery to honor my culture. I collaborated with Kolaval Bordados, an organization in Southern Mexico that promotes authentic Mexican embroidery while honoring the artisans behind each thread. I aim to celebrate the connection between the artisans that create and the women that wear their creations.
I want to honor every hard-working artisan behind each thread.
LAS MUJERES NO SON HISTéRICAS, SON HISTÓRICAS.
I wanted to thank Kolaval Bordados for collaborating with me. While I love artistic messages, I felt I needed to do more and work directly with Mexican artisans. Kolaval Bordados assisted me with two embroidered looks while also educating me on the traditional embroideries of Mexico. My ‘Sirenita’ gown has panels of Oaxacan embroidery, while the ‘Corra’ look is embroidered in Chiapan motifs.
